Indications for contact lens use:
1-
OPTICAL-
- to correct the refractive error, thus ridding the patient of the cosmetic blemish of spectacles
- compared to glasses, the quality of vision achieved with contact lens is far superior esp. in people with high minus or plus number
a) - Regular - used to correct spherical powers
b) - Toric - used to correct cylindrical power, in patients with significant astigmatism
c) - Multifocal- older age groups using bifocals and sports personnel for correction of distance, intermediate and near vision
2 - THERAPEUTIC
a) - Rigid gas permeable lenses - in various corneal pathologies e.g.keratoconus
b) - Bandage contact lenses - to reduce irritation in epithelial defects, post LASIK
c) - Aniridia lenses – to reduce glare
3 - COSMETIC
A wide spectrum of coloured contact lenses are available at our centre.
4 - RECENT ADVANCES
ROSE-K lenses have been recently introduced at our centre and are used in difficult cases when the corneal shape is altered.
a) - Keratoconus
b) - Post LASIK ectasia
c) - Irregular cornea , eg. After keratoplasty, after trauma
- How we work in contact lens department?
1 - A detailed and complete refraction with retinoscopy
2 - Keratometry
a- Manual
b-Topography assisted
3 - The corresponding base curve is calculated, and accordingly a trial fit is given
4 - The patients are taught how to wear/remove lenses, and the “Dos & DONTs” associated with contact lens use
4 - After comparing the fit, the vision is re-assessed
5 - Final prescription is given based on the fit of the lens as assessed by us, and objective comfort of the patient
6 - Regular follow up of patients with contact lens is performed.
- Complications of contact lenses:
Some of the important complications associated with contact lens use are
- Serious eye infection can sometime result from-
- Use of lenses for prolonged period of time,
- sleeping/swimming with contact lenses ,
- improper cleaning of contact lens, and
- using bad quality contact lens solution
- imperfect fiting of the lenses-
- tight- reduce the oxygen transfer across the lenses and cause damage to cornea
- loose- lens might fall down
- allergy causing itching, irritation and watering
- dry eyes
