The Department of General Ophthalmology manages common eye disorders such as :
Refractive error
Eye lid disorders. e.g.
• • • blepharitis ( inflammation involving the lid margin and eyelashes)
• • • chalazion ( a lump in the eyelid that is caused by inflammation of a sweat gland that lies
• • • within the eye lid.)
• • • stye ( acute painful swelling due to infection of the glands of the eyelids at the base of the hair follicle)
Dry eyes
Acute red eye which could be caused by
• • • subconjunctival haemorrhage.
• • • conjunctivitis (an inflammation of the conjunctiva – the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface • • • of the eyelids )
• • • keratitis ( inflammation of the cornea)
• • • iritis (inflammation of the coloured portion of the eye)
• • • acute glaucoma ( due to raised intraocular pressure)
The Department also deals with minor injuries to the eye and removal of any foreign body from the eye.
